"My Brother's Keeper" © Amy Beth Augustin Barlow 2004

Sometimes we hear the story so many times that the brutal edge loses its impact. This family was moments after perfection, a heartbeat away from paradise and already was rift with jealousy, hate and then...murder. This would be headline news...it was ugly. And God, who new already, asks anyhow, "Where's your brother?" And Cain, who knew too, replies, "What? Am I my brother's keeper?" There is a certain intimacy here. God talking to His creation. His creation sneering back. One quarter of the entire world's population had just been cruelly wiped out. And Cain's arrogant answer is poignant. Am I my brother's keeper? Absolutely. Family is made up of keeping, protecting, finding, growing and loving. Cain knew where his brother was, but he didn't have a clue about much else. (Genesis 4:8-12)
