Whiz Kids tutoring is an opportunity to focus on the needs of one urban child (1st - 8th grade). Tutors assist their students with school work and help them learn academic skills. Volunteers build caring relationships with neighborhood kids that not only benefit them academically, but also emotionally and spiritually. Each week the tutor has an hour of one-on-one tutoring time where the focus is literacy, basic skills, encouragement and homework. The student and tutor also have the option of participating in an additional 30 minutes of "club time" that includes a prayer, academic tips, announcements, singing, and a simple and practical Bible lesson.
Tutors should also plan on 10-15 minutes both before and after tutoring to transport students to/from their homes and to check in with caregivers. All of our kids live near the church and you will always be assigned another adult to drive with.
We tutor at First Avenue Presbyterian Church (map) and meet during the school year (we take off Thanksgiving week, all major holidays and have an extended Christmas Break). We also have substitutes available who can fill in during times of illness or business/family travel commitments.

Tutors are given effective training and there is always a local school teacher on site to assist us! We have two available sessions of tutoring and so many kids waiting for their special someone.
